A Friends Review
This is typical of the work Neil Chambers writes. He has collated a vast amount of information that is totally useless to anybody, bar those that really care. I think that he should spend more time researching subjects of a more interesting nature. The author needs to get a life and soon.

excellent
A thoroughly well thought out articulate book with all the relevant information to give you a good understanding of the titled subject. I recommend a long slow read to enable all the details content to be absorbed. Well done to the editor in collating all the relevant facts neede to complete this project.

Log Construction Manual: The Ultimate Guide to Building Handcrafted Log Homes
Published in Paperback by Deep Stream Press (December, 2002)
Author: Robert Wood Chambers
Average review score:

log construction manual
I've been a professional log builder for 20 years and this is the only book that I recommend without hesitation as a text to our apprentices. Mr. Chambers has distilled a lifetime of building and teaching into one masterful volume.

Look no further for a book on this subject....
If I were allowed to have only one book on logbuilding this would be the one I'd keep. It is without a doubt the best written instruction guide I have found. Robert Chambers is one of those guys who seems to be able to explain complicated tasks in a very plain english kind of way. This makes it very easy for somebody like myself with no experience in logbuilding to be able to step outside and try some of the techniques on practice logs. He covers the very simple to the very complex and if you take your time and read it carefully you will understand both. If you are hiring someone to build your home this is still an excellent book for you. It educates the reader on where and how to look for good craftsmanship in a log building. I have read enough material on this subject to honestly say that all the others have left me with the question mark over my head. Good Luck and God Bless.....

Great for all women business owners!
I liked the down-to-earth approach. Some of the stories remind me of my own experiences. It's nice to know that there are people who have the same experiences that I have. I would highly recommend it.

Finally, real stories for the rest of us!
You know, I get tired to reading those business books that detail success stories of your entrepreneuer brethens who have braved the storms for all of 1-2 sentences and then WHAMO they are ultra-successful. Maintaining Motivation is fun and it's real. I identified with everyone and everything!

The Potluck Hall of Fame & Other Bizarre Christian Lists
Published in Paperback by Intervarsity Press (July, 1992)
Authors: David Dickerson and Mary Chambers
Average review score:

Dickerson gives religious zealots what they deserve.
I used to work with the guy who wrote this book. He's one of the cleverest people I've ever met. Really, any brainier and you couldn't stand him. More to the point, he was raised by fundamentalist Christians but managed to achieve escape velocity somehow. What such an upbringing provides in a book like this is insider knowledge and buried rage--a nice alchemical mix for making gold out of stupidity. You will laugh until you cry. I'd give it 5 stars, except that the publisher (as noted by the author) did dilute some of the content, fearing lawsuits and perhaps the wrath of an angry God. But Dave feared no one in writing it, and the combination of wit, weird facts, and imaginative fancy is well worth the low, low price.

Divine Laughter.
God has a sense of humor and I'm sure He's laughing about this book. Filled with all sorts of "Christian Lists", hilarious cartoons, and various facts, this is a book that any "educated" Christian is sure to enjoy. Be forewarned, however, if you don't have a slightly warped sense of humor, you maybe offended.

Roman Carnival and Other Overtures in Full Score: From the Complete Works Edition
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 1995)
Author: Hector Berlioz
Average review score:

Great Value
Dover scores are always a great bargain because they're high quality and economical. This collection of Berlioz Overtures is no exception. I only wish that all of his overtures were included in this collection, otherwise a good value.

Recommended.

and the "other overtures" are...
In additon to Roman Carnival, op. 9 (1844), the other Berlioz overtures in this collection are: Overture to Benvenuto Cellini, op. 23 (1834-37/1852); Le Corsaire, op. 21 (1844); Prelude to Les Troyens a Carthage (1856-63); Beatrice et Benedict (1860-62). From Dover's Bibliographical Note: "This Dover edition, first published in 1995, is an unabridged republication of five works originally published in the section "Ouvertueren (Serie II)" of Hector Berlioz, Werke: Herausgegeben von Ch. Malherbe und F. Weingartner, Band V, by Breitkopf & Haertel, Leipzig, n.d. Titles are in French, German and English. The Dover edition adds lists of contents and instrumentation, accompanied by information about the source of each work, its librettist(s) (where applicable), and dates of composition and first performance."

Romeo and Juliet Overture and Capriccio Italien in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1998)
Authors: Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
Average review score:

A Fine Set of Scores
This is an easy-to-read set of score of two of Peter Tchaikovsky's most celebrated orchestral works. As to Capriccio Italien, Tchaikovsky began composing this upon the inspiration he got when he was staying in Florence, Italy. It is a bunch of published Italian folk-tunes and popular tunes that caught his ears during his stay in Italy. He began composing in Rome in 1880 and finished it after he returned to Russia. Romeo and Juliet is one of the pieces that initially made Tchaikovsky internationally famous, composed during September and November 1869. Both Romeo and Juliet and Capriccio Italien reflect Tchaikovsky's talent in producing of uniquely convincing melodies and excellence in orchestration. And this score is a fine companion for those wishing to pursue a detailed study of Tchaikovsky's masterpieces.

One of Tchaikovsky's Best
At the youthful age of only 29, Tchaikovsky managed to make one of the most profound pieces of his career and most heard piece in our culture today. "Romeo and Juliet" is a magnificent piece that captures the passion and tragic fate of Shakespeare's most famous work. The love theme in Romeo and Juliet portrays Romeo and Juliet's love better than any other, even Prokoffiev's famous version adapted for a play. "Capriccio Italien", less dark and heavy as the latter piece, is a pleasant contrast, complete with Italian-influenced songs and harmony. Dover's wonderful release of the full scores to these two well-known pieces gives people the chance to study and further appreciate these masterpieces. The complexity of these works can no greater be expressed than by looking through this book alone. It is a great source of knowledge for anyone interested in music theory and a treasure trove of experience for anybody interested in orchestration. This book deserves to be in any classical enthusiast's bookshelf.

Scheherazade in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1984)
Authors: Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov and Rimsky Korsakov
Average review score:

Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade
This Dover publication is a very cost-effective way to get accustomed with this masterpiece by Rimsky-Korsakov. Scheherazade tells the story of 1001 nights, Rimsky shines his light over a number of this tales. The score is clear, well-readible, but lacks commentary and is not an outstanding reproduction.

Scheherazade, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakow
Among Rimsky-Korsakow's most beloved works, this orchestral poem depicting select tales from Scheherazade and 1001 Nights.

The score is very durable and will lie flat nicely on a desk or music stand. The print is very large and easy to read, despite it's smaller size -- Dover opted for 8.5 x 11 in lieu of their more standard 9 x 12. The low price is a great attraction to the starving music student.

You'll love this colorful score for the Rimsky-Korsakov's lush orchestration and romantic writing (the score itself has many colorful pictures on it). This is a must for the music student, professional, or advid listener, alike.

Sex & the Paranormal
Published in Paperback by Blandford Press (October, 1999)
Author: Paul, Dr Chambers
Average review score:

Provocative insight into an ancient problem.
Dr. Paul Chambers in his "Sex and the Paranormal" gives us a thorough histoical walk-through of about every abberant sexual paranormal manifestation from "Popbawa", an African/Idonesian demon who assults men in their sleep, to the current trend of having extraterrestial sex. All the reportage is done with the eye more on the scholarly than the tabloid. Dr. Chambers answers the question, why, through all the millennium, is sex regarded so evil? Why does each indigenous culture seem to create their own sexual monster? What's going on here? What happened to just good, clean sex? The answer, Dr. Chambers points out in this very readable book, deals with our very human shame and guilt about sexual matters which has its roots in the very earliest Biblical expression. After all it was Eve who tempted Adam and got the two of them thrown the hell out of Eden. We learn that mythology has given us much to ponder about our own sexuality and none of it very good.

Tounge in cheek analysis of some bizarre experiences
In Dr. Paul Chambers' introduction to _Sex and the Paranormal_ he mentions that the results of the combination of sexuality and the paranormal are sure to be truly bizarre. Chambers' does not disappoint the reader when he makes this claim. _Sex and the Paranormal_ tries, almost with a straight face, to examine some of the most uncanny phenomena imaginable. Reports of ghost rape or Old Hag attacks are common throughout the world and can be explained as a form of sleep paralysis. A good deal of attention is paid to the notorious and eccentric witch-hunter's manual, _Malleus Malefecarum_, a book which in fact was in accordance with the worldview of the day and not completely the misogynist rantings of two zealous Dominican priests. The history of the demons known as Incubi and Succubi, which would sexually molest either men or women, is traced. The Lilith is another sexually ravenous demon who originated in Cabalistic myths centered on Adam's rebellious hypothetical wife before God created Eve. In the ancient world at temples and sacred spots, different cultures worshipped the creative powers of nature, in particular the image of the phallus, which is alluded to in the Bible. Temples, including Solomon's own (according to the Bible after the king's apostasy) frequently employed prostitutes who the ancients believed could help men be in touch with the gods. During the Middle Ages, the Christian Church conducted witch-hunts in fear of the lewd sexual practices of witches and sorcerors, which included nocturnal orgies, the Black Mass and copulation with the Devil. Chambers posists the popular theory that the witch scare was the result of subconscious fears of female sexuality, exacerbated by the ultra-conservative Christian views of morality and religion at the time. Poltergeists, the proverbial "things that go bump in the night," are possibly the result of sexual anxiety or tension. The second half of the book takes an even more distrubing turn when it discusses Satanic ritual abuse. There is little or no physical evidence for this phenomena, or that of penis-snatching by mysterious beings in Asia and Africa, multiple personality disorder or alien abductions in which people either have love affairs with extraterrestrials or are medically examined and sexually abused by them. These are found to be interrelated as these happenings are connected by similar geographic area, culture and the people that experience them already have a predisposition toward the paranormal. Testimonies of Satanic ritual abuse and alien abduction could be the products of religious culture, and suggestability of patients under hypnosis and mass hysteria (similar to the girls who would scream and cheer when they saw the Beatles, as the author notes). Even Shunamitism (derived from a Biblical story about King David in his old age) is mentioned--the notion that an elderly man sleeping next to a virgin but without intercourse would be healthful--is in here. However, the most bizarre story in here is about Smurfs (yes, the little blue cartoon characters). In Houston Texas, 1983, there were rumors of Smurfs in junior high schools carrying weapons and threatening students. There were even rumors of principals being killed persisting after it was well evident that they were alive. This case indicates the extent of how no matter how unreasonable an idea is can spread and be held onto depending on the right circumstances. The outlook of _Sex and the Paranormal_ suffers, I feel, from too-much of a secular outlook, especially in the treatment of the more Christian-orientated subjects. In the end Dr. Chambers praises the Fortean tradition as going outside of the scientific box when it attempts to amass as much knoweldge as possible about the most outlandish incidents and ideas, and tries to make sense of them.
